| 29 June: 70.3 Half Ironman training - [ show/hide ]
70.3 Half Iron Man group training starts on 1st August 2010 with Embark
If you are considering entering half ironman 70.3 in January 2011, or have already done so, then now’s the time to start think about training for it. If you are currently swimming a kilometre nonstop, riding 50kms on the road and running 8-10kms then you are at the level that Embark requires to begin with the group training in August. If you are not currently at this level and require some help and motivation to get there, then get in contact with us and join the existing group that is currently on the build up program.
How the training works
Embark has been set up to guide first timers through the process of completing a triathlon. Embark runs all year round, but from August we focus particularly on 70.3. Even if you have completed the distance before, the coaching and group sessions that Embark offers will prove invaluable to your overall experience.
Embark offers a coached swim session, run session and bike session each week, and you receive a weekly program to complete on your own, in your own time. The advantage of group training is that it keeps motivation levels up and aids in healthy competition for progression. As the sessions are coached, there is always a coach available to ask questions and answer queries.
During the months leading up to the race, we will complete single discipline races to get us prepared for the distances. For example 10km, 15km and half marathon running races, 60km-80km-100km PPA road races, and sea and dam swims. We will also train the disciplines together, back to back ie: brick sessions.
We get nutritional experts in to give us guidance about training and preparing for race day, and we assist in correct equipment choice for the race. Although Embark takes utmost care in injury prevention, should you get injured, we are aligned with professional biokentisists , physio-therapists and leading sports practitioners in order to recommended the best in the industry.
Should you wish to find out more about the Embark program please check out the website at www.embark.co.za

| 1 Feb: ATC and offshore bank to sponsor elite team - [ show/hide ]
Fairbairn Private Bank, an offshore bank with representative offices in South Africa, is proud to announce its sponsorship with ATC Multisport of the Fairbairn Private Bank Multisport Team (“Team FPB”) for 2010.

Fairbairn Private Bank is proud to announce its sponsorship in South Africa of the Fairbairn Private Bank Multisport Team (“Team FPB”) for 2010. The offshore bank is wholly owned by Nedbank, a member of the Old Mutual Group, and has a representative office in South Africa. Team FPB has been developed as an extension of the very successful Fairbairn Private Bank Cycling Team which was launched at the start of 2009. Team FPB will race at an elite level, participating in all the major multisport and mountain biking events during 2010, including the Absa Cape Epic, Ironman and the national mountain bike cross-country and track cycling circuit. Team members include previous national triathlon champions Raoul de Jongh and Brett Chilcott, plus well-known mountain bikers Cornelius Muller, Craig Boyes and Louis Bresler-Knipe.
Team FPB will also encompass a charity aspect for the Cape Epic through a venture known as Rok This in Cape Town. Rok This is a philanthropic venture which generates clothing and food for the homeless people of South Africa and the team members will raise money for the venture with every kilometre they race. In addition Team FPB also supports the Durbanville Children’s Home. Team FPB is particularly focused on youth development and actively seeks young up-and-coming talent that can be nurtured within the team structure. This program has already shown value as a 2009 team member recently secured a professional contract. The team is also affiliated to ATC Multisport, the largest multisport club in South Africa.
Fairbairn Private Bank is joined by numerous other supporting sponsors, including Sport-X Supplements, Whaspgel, Rockets Compression Garments and Sludge Sealants. Team FPB will ride the newly released 2010 Morewood bikes, manufactured locally in Pietermaritzburg. Well-known biokineticist, Liné Griffiths, who has also worked with The Bulls and Specialized teams, will manage Team FPB and work closely with the younger members of the team.
“We believe that the profile of multisport and the rapid growth in the sport provide excellent synergies with our client base, and are excited about the opportunities that this sponsorship brings to Fairbairn Private Bank,” commented local bank representative, Guy Veysey.

| 10 Jan: Totalsports Challenge Round-Up - [ show/hide ]
The weekend saw over 30 ATC Multisport members complete the TSC 2010.
For the first time since the event’s conception, Totalsports Challenge competitors could only complete five of the action-packed seven disciplines when strong wind conditions forced event organisers to cancel the 12km surfski and 1.5km swim in Gordon’s Bay. Gale force winds and choppy sea conditions on Saturday, 09 January 2010, prevented competitors from taking to the water and caused an adrenaline pumping race start for the 50-km road biking section of the event.
According to individual men’s Totalsports Challenge winner Dan Hugo, the cancellation of the two disciplines added a new dimension to the already exhilarating event. “I can’t think of a better way to start off the New Year. The cancellation of the surfski and swim disciplines saw the road bike discipline starting off as a serious road race. It was a new and awesome experience for me. The new mountain bike route was also much more technical, resulting in a challenging yet fun ride, while the introduction of a 3km gravel section during the road run was most welcome. I had a great day and look forward to returning next year,” says Hugo, who completed the event in 04hours58minutes19seconds. Cas van Aardenne finished 2nd, while Jacques van Rensburg placed 3rd. Van Rensburg was also crowned the first official winner in the Master’s Category, which was introduced this year for veterans aged 40 and older.
Top South African multi sport athlete Hanlie Booyens secured the top spot in the individual women’s category of the Totalsports Challenge when she crossed the finish line in 05hours55minutes13seconds. According to Booyens, she trained really hard for the surfski discipline and was a bit disappointed when it had to be cancelled. “Today’s race was much faster due to the cancellation of the first two disciplines. I love the new mountain bike route, the more technical the better for me. All in all I had a great race and am really happy with my performance,” says Booyens. Kim Rew finished second.
Team ‘Totalsports All Stars’ took top honours in the 7-member men’s team category of the event when they crossed the finish line in 04hours14minutes30seconds. Team ‘New Balance Pro’ came in 2nd, while Team ‘ATC Multisport All Star’ finished 3rd. For the first time in seven years, team ‘New Balance Women’s Pro’ beat team ‘Totalsports Ladies A’ to the finish line crossing it in 05hours18minutes18seconds. Team ‘Hot Spots’ placed 3rd. Team ‘New Balance / My Training Day 1’ placed first in the 7-member mixed team category when they crossed the finish line in 04hours41minutes06seconds. Team ‘Contego’ came in 2nd, while team ‘New Balance / My Training Day 2’ finished 3rd.
Gavin Noble placed first in the individual men’s category of the Totalsports Terra Firma Challenge when he crossed the finish line in 04hours09minutes05seconds. Nico Pfitzenmaier came in 2nd, while Raoul de Jongh placed 3rd. Team ‘Rock Care Titans’ placed 1st in the four member male team category of the event, followed by team ‘Oscar’ in 2nd place and team ‘Atlantic Storm’ in 3rd place.
Participants in the 2010 Totalsports Challenge had to complete a 50km road bike (from Gordon’s Bay to Kleinmond), 13km road run, 13km K1 canoe, 25km mountain bike and finally a 9km beach run, while Totalsports Terra Firma Challenge athletes had to complete a 50km road bike (from Gordon’s Bay to Kleinmond), 13km road run, 25km mountain Bike and 9km beach run.

| 17 Dec: Humbling and Hot - Kona Report - [ show/hide ]
ATC Athlete of the Year, Martha Koekemoer, shares some of her experiences at the 2009 Ironman World Champs in Hawaii.
During race week, downtown Kona was a feast of activity, excitement and nervous energy. Every morning hundreds of lean mean skinsuit athletes were swimming part of the course at the Kailua Pier whilst we had breakfast at our favourite spot – Lava Java (it’s worth traveling 46 hours just to taste it!) You have never seen so many beautiful bodies and bikes. Ripped guys and very fast girls were running and biking everywhere. I tried to keep my cool in more way than one…
The weather conditions for the Hawaiian Ironman World Championships on 10 October 2009 would have been perfect for a windsurfing world champs what with 100% humidity, an average temperature of 32.2ºC, and the unmistakable presence of the brutal Kailua-Kona wind. As it happened, there was no sail in sight and I went head-to-head with the elements sporting and a head cold!
It was a surreal, and yet a very genuine experience, to stand on the shores of Kailua bay beside 1800 of the best athletes in the world. I was about to start the holy grail of triathlons, the race I have dreamed about, sacrificed for and focused on. The gun went off way too suddenly, no counting or warning, just the noise and the white and fight. The kicking, pushing and shoving was much worse than any other race I have ever done, but I was mentally prepared for this. My main aim was to preserve energy and slip as much as I could; this I managed to do, but it was at the expense of my own speed and rhythm. I actually left the water with some sense of excitement and in high spirits, as I did not stop swimming once and never freaked out (for those who have shared my swim journey will know how huge this is). My ecstasy was short lived as the 1h17 on the clock and my lonely bike made it clear that I will spend the next 5+ hours playing catch up.
Other than the coughing and the constant internal battle, it all went according to plan until about 90km into the bike when I hit the climb to Harwee; it dawned on me that I have not eaten any solids! I took two sips of my Herbal Life/Pronutro shake and realised this is a South African winter training drink and I lost the bottle as I was not going to carry any unnecessary weight up the climb. Yes, you sometimes loose your head when you are doing the most important race of your life? The 17km climb was tough and I did not know it then, but the best 17km of my race was upon me. I flew down Harvee and the people around me seemed stationary. When I took the turn to take the last 55km back to Alii drive the infamous Kona wind hit me. There were times when I thought I should stop to check the breaks on my wheels. It was brutal to bike your heart out staying below 20km/h; seeing with each slow kilometre the sweat, training, commitment and my sub 11h goal slip away. At 170km all guns blazing my inner thighs started to cramp – I took 4 salt tablets and earnestly prayed for a cramp free marathon. I finished the bike in just under 6hours.
The run plan was to walk every water point until 21km and after that only the ones I needed…it turned out that every single water point until 42.2km was desperately needed. It seemed I could never get enough ice – in my sport bra over my head; constantly rubbing my face and arms with those magic little blocks – the only solution I had to combat the excruciating heat with. The black tar and the black lava fields crept in and there was no colour – inside or out. I was certain they moved the energy lab as I was waiting, anticipating, praying for that turn around point which did not seem to come. Getting there was like reaching an oasis (albeit short lived) plus seeing Sarah made me feel that it was not all lost and I was not totally alone in my agony. It was about 2km out of the energy lab on my way “home” when I realised I had absolutely nothing left. Deep down I somehow still believed my fighting spirit will come back and I will end the race like any other – fast and in high spirits. The rest of the way was the toughest 15km of my life it was a constant internal battle for survival. I had to keep convincing my body that I did not hate it I just hated what I was doing and I promised myself I will never ever do this again. I was searching for the reason I was there, the reason I ever took up the sport, the reason I have gone crazy and thought I ever liked this, not to mention love it. And obviously I was searching for that fighting spirit… I could not pick myself up and run the way I trained countless hours for. Taking the last turn onto Alii drive hearing the 20,000+ American fans shouting “good joab” did put a smile back on my face and that feeling you only get on the Ironman red carpet did cloak me with a feeling of victory and gratefulness. I finished the marathon in 3h58 and the race in 11h18 with tears of agony and joy, and not true to myself I have to admit – a deep sense of disappointment.
My findings of my 10 October 2009 Hawaiian Ironman World championships are summed up by Lee Gruenfield: “Experience is a harsh teacher – she gives the test before she gives the lesson”.
And those lessons are invaluable and good and I would love to share them with any athlete who wants to be bored. But above all I have the pure joy of knowing that I passionately love it all – the test, the pain, the suffering, the success, the disappointment, the searching, the defying of all natural laws and the knowledge that impossible is just a big word…impossible is nothing!
To you Ironmen, prospective Ironmen, promising Ironmen, loyal supporters and invaluable friends – I look forward to meet you on Hoby beach on 25 April 2010 for yet another lemming in the pursuit of what we love.
To my AMAIZING sponsors: PricewaterhouseCoopers, CareCross, the Ackerman Family Foundation, BioAnabolics and Cadence; I will never be able to thank you enough!
I wish you a blessed active and safe festive season!
Love and peace, Martha

| 10 Oct 09: Clan William Report - [ show/hide ]
Once again ATC dominated the annual Freshpak Rooibos Fitness Festival at Clanwilliam!
 | |
From early on Saturday morning, ATC’ers were at the dam, supporting and competing in all the day’s events, looking the part in their supporter’s t’s and awesome new kit!! The newly branded NB gazebos were a buzz of excitement, the meeting place, a shelter from the blistering sun, bike “shop”, changing rooms, place of siesta and an awesome eyesore to anybody wanting to deny who deserves the club award..
The day started with the long swims (3km, and 1.5kms), the biathlon, duathlon and finally the triathlon in the afternoon. Not even the extreme heat and very choppy (triathlon) swim could dampen anybody’s spirits. For a few of the ATC’ers, Clanwilliam was their 1st taste of the wonderful world of multi-sport, and definitely a highlight!
'Seeing as it was my first triathlon I was thrilled that my experience at Clanwilliam exceeded all expectations! What a great weekend and an awesome event for beginners to get started. It definitely helped to have the support of friends from ATC to encourage me and get me across that finish line!' Michelle Adler
Very good performances from Jayde Gower-Jackson, Viv Fenton, Tristan Kelly, and Steve Attwell in the tri, Wane Rossouw, Stewart Rew and Kim Rew in the 3km swim, Tarryn Anelli, Philip Emslie and Tristan Kelly in the 1.5km swim, Gilbert Lucas in the duathlon and Gert Legend Wilkins winning his age category in the Biathlon!! To only mention a few…
Congratulations to everybody who competed and thank you to everybody who was there to support!!

| 5th Sept 09: ATC repositions as ATC Multisport - [ show/hide ]
Although triathlon has always been our core focus, our new format club under the banner of ATC Multisport will now cover Triathlon, as well as road & trail running, and road cycling & mountainbiking.
New membership year and exciting changes to ATC
Since we launched The Atlantic Triathlon Club three years ago, we have grown to be one of the biggest multisport clubs in South Africa, thanks largely to your support. As a dynamic club, we need to adapt to our members requirements, and with this is mind we will be repositioning the Club into an organisation that is more encompassing of a range of sporting disciplines. Although triathlon has always been our core focus, our new format club ATC Multisport will now cover the following:
· Triathlon, Duathlon & Xterra through the Atlantic Triathlon Club
· Road running and trail running through ATC Running
· Road cycling and mountainbiking through ATC Cycling
That’s right, we aim to be your “one-stop” sporting Club. We will continue to be affiliated to Western Province Triathlon; but also hope to shortly receive our Western Province Athletics/ASA license; and have joined forces with Club Olympic Cycles to offer Cycling South Africa affiliation. We will have unique kit for all of the disciplines, which will be unveiled soon. Full details will be up on the website soon.

| 28 Aug 09: Girls rides - Summer is almost here - [ show/hide ]
It's officially spring in less than a week. The days are longer and the sun is shining more often, which means more days to ride!
Okay, so this is the plan:
In order to make the rides worthwhile for everybody from beginners, who are completely new to cycling, to the more experienced girls. The Sunday rides will be a little more structured. I have put together a schedule for our rides for the whole month of September (see attached document), so you can plan your rides. The 1st month we will start at the same place every week, but increasing the distance by a couple of kms every week, until we can all ride to the top of Chappies together! The following month we can vary the routes...
There are 3 options every week...have a look at the schedule and let me know what you think, your input will be greatly appreciated!
For this Sunday, 30 August, we are riding 8am, from Camps Bay Police Station parking lot. Please be there a few minutes before, so we can start riding at 8am sharp, before the roads get too busy! Please come and join us, no matter how fit/unfit, experienced or not! NO HELMET NO RIDE.
Please let Adri (084 9145603) know if you are joining us before Friday 12pm.

| 24 Aug 09: More success for Team FPB/ATC - [ show/hide ]
The Fairbairn Private Bank Cycling Team, supported by Atlantic Triathlon Club, has had a string of successes recently. This included the TransBaviaans Mountain Challenge, where they had a great result.
 |
|
| | |
The TransBaviaans is the longest single stage mountain bike race in the world, covering 230kms from Willowmore in the Eastern Cape to the famed surfing town of J-Bay. The race crosses the Baviaanskloof Mountain Range, and is non-stop over a period of 24 hours. The Team consisted of ATC members Matthew Blake, Brett Chilcott and Guy Veysey, who completed the gruelling mountain crossing in 11hours 29 minutes. This was not the only ATC team to compete and score great results. Team Kelfords, consisting of Grant Fillmore and Craig Hughes finished in a time of 12.27. Well done to both teams!
In other news, Team FPB/ATC finally stepped onto the winners’ podium as ATC youngster Craig Boyes won Junior division of the recent Wellington Mountainbike Challenge.
As part of the FPB/ATC Team’s expansion into multisport, Craig also teamed up with Riaan Wildskut to win the Durbanville Duathlon. The Team also took the mixed win at this event.
Regular Team member and ATC athlete, Rohan Kennedy took top honours, winning the very popular 20km off-road trail run that forms part of the Cape Gravity Festival in a time of 1hour 24 minutes.
Our Xterra team of Craig Boyes and Raoul de Jongh were narrowly edged out in a nail-biting finish to the Knsyna Festival Xterra, but still managed to grab a fantastic second place in a field of some serious pro athletes.
With this string of successes, Team ATC/FPB will now race the remainder of the mountainbiking season locally, and also aims to make some waves in road cycling when the season begins in earnest later this year.

Last week a new committee was voted in to take Western Province Triathlon (WPTA) to the next level.
The outgoing committee led by Paul Gripper and Wane Rossouw built a superb platform for the new committee to launch their new initiatives off.
Triathlon is one of the fastest growing sports in the country and relies heavily on the support of WPTA.
Once again, ATC was close to the action as members Brett Chilcott and Jayde Gower-Jackson were voted in as Vice-Chairman Triathlon and Treasurer respectively.
The first event on the WTPA is the NB Duathlon incorporating WP Trials which takes place at Boland Landbou on the 24th of May 2009.
Norman Brookes who headed up the British Triathlon for a number of years, brings a wealth of international knowledge to the team as Chairman.
ATC wishes WPTA all the best of luck for the coming year.

| 17 Feb: Yes, we're going over Chappies! - [ show/hide ]
Chapmans Peak has been opened for the Argus
Boyes Drive
(taking from www.cycletour.co.za)
We have been closely monitoring the progress of the road works along the Main Road in Muizenberg. Heavy rains during the winter of 2008 contributed to the fact that this construction project is now three months behind schedule. Negotiating some 35 000 cyclists through the current 3m wide stretch of road will not only require a significant measure of management, it is also a safety hazard. The option of amending the route, so that it travels over Boyes Drive instead, was therefore studied in detail.
"Fortunately for the Cycle Tour, the Cycle Lab Cape Cobra Challenge recently used the Boyes Drive alternative successfully. As the road works along Main Road will continue for at least another three years and the fact that Boyes Drive is 8 to 9m wide, we have chosen this route as our best option," says Ken Sturgeon, Co-Director of the Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust.
"In past years when Chapman's Peak was closed, Ou Kaapse Weg's steep descent was successfully managed and we intend to put that experience to good use on Boyes Drive," he concluded.
Green Point
The Cycle Tour's finish area has been affected due to the rapid changes caused as a result of the construction of the Green Point Stadium. An agreement has been reached regarding the use of this area.
The finish line, seating stand, medal collection and medical facilities will remain unchanged from 2008. There are however significant changes to the bike park, location of the hospitality village, long distance bike transporters and parking areas. Parking will be significantly reduced and we are encouraging cyclists to travel together in car pools to ensure they are able to find parking in and around the finish area.

| 2 Nov: Schutte and Gower-Jackson series winners - [ show/hide ]
The third and final race in the X-Roads duathlon series was set to be a fast race as the Phisantakraal Farm had dried out over the last month or so. This meant that the mountain bikers at last had the upper hand. The 1st and 2nd race had both been won by road bikers!
The overall winner for the series was still in the balance. In the mens, Jan Schutte had a 10 point lead over the next 3, but only 4 points separated Cas Van Aardenne, Sakkie Hanekom and Justin Berry. In the Ladies, the series was going to either Jayde Gower-Jackson or Kirsty Weir, as Robyn Ferrar was out due to a torn ACL.
With a little overnight rain the course was slightly wet, but still around 4 minutes quicker for the mountain bikers. Jan was eyeing out his chance for his first race victory, and with Kirsty not pitching, Jayde new she just had to finish in the top 10 to claim the overall title. The first run leg, a 5k loop around the farm, saw all 180 competitors off to a good race in slightly cooler conditions than the last race. The beauty of hosting the race at the Phisantakraal Farm is that it is very children friendly, so we had lots of moms and children cheering on their dads! We were lucky enough to have the privilege of Paul Valsters commentating and he kept us entertained and informed the whole race though. Paul has an uncanny ability to remember almost everyone’s name in the race and this defiantly spurs the competitors on.
Pieter Wehmeyer was first into transition, roughly 1 minute in front of Jean Van Wyk and Jan. But this is where it was all about to change as Jan assaults the mountain bike leg. At the turn around point of the road bike, Jan had gained almost a 1 minute on the lead road biker and had over taken the 1st team of Craig Hughes (Best Friend) and Fast Eddie Lambert. A team has never beaten an individual before and Jan wasn’t going to let this start now! In the ladies, Dr Alae Brand had blitzed the field and held a 2 minute gap over the next lady, Carol Messham and Viv Fenton, Jayde close behind. Most of the ladies today choosing the road bike leg!
Jan comes into the transition a full 2 minutes ahead of Pieter, and with a gap like this, he is assured of a podium place. Alea brand too comes off the bike with an unassailable lead, and holds on for the victory. Closely behind is Carol, Jayde and Viv. 3rd overall for Jayde gives her the boasting rights as the overall USN NB X Roads Series 2008 winner. Jan claiming his first victory in the series and first victory for the mountain bikers, and the overall series too.
Well done to the Atlantic Triathlon Club for putting on a truly memorable series, one that they want to grow even bigger and better for next year.
All photos, and i mean ALL photos, around 500 of them, will be on www.oakpics.com and can be purchased online. The guys at oakpics have definitely learned how to capture the essence of racing!
We would also like to thank the sponsors who made the series possible, USN and New Balance. Chrysalis Academy for their FABULOUS marshals!

| 6 Oct: ATC dominates at Freshpak Festival - [ show/hide ]
The Atlantic Triathlon Club dominated at the Freshpak Fitness Festival in Clanwilliam this weekend, taking 8 of the top 10 men's spots and 5 of the women's.
The annual Freshpak Fitness Festival, held over the weekend of 4th and 5th October in Clanwilliam, once again attracted a great field of beginner and experienced athletes. The Festival includes a long distance swim of 3km, Fit-Kids events, a Biathlon, Duathlon and the main event being a sprint distance triathlon (800m swim; 20km bike; 5km run).
The weather played along with great conditions on the day. The long swim saw various youngsters setting blistering paces. Stewart Rew had a great swim for ATC, being the first Senior out the water. ATC athlete Rohan Kennedy snapped up the biathlon title, and X-Roads Event 2 winner Pieter Wehmeyer taking the duathlon title.
The triathlon was closely fought with elite athlete Claude Eksteen eventually pipping ATC-athlete Kent Horner to the men's title. The ladies race was won by Vicky Van der Merwe. The most impressive, however, was the huge number of beginners, including many girls, who took it to the max and were rewarded with strong finishes in their first triathlon.

| 29 Sep: Schutte and Weir lead X-Roads after race 2 - [ show/hide ]
The weather was playing along for one day only as the second event in the USN New Balance X-Roads Series took place yesterday at Phisantekraal Farm.
The numbers were up on the first event with well over 200 athletes taking to the course. The conditions were wet and muddy, but the weather was fine and dry, making for some fast roadbike times. The first run leg was quick-paced with top athletes Kent Horner, Claire Kinsley, Jeannie Bomford and Rohan Kennedy pushing the pace. New participant Pieter Wehmeyer surprised the field but breaking off the front in the run and holding this lead onto the roadbike. His pace proved too quick for the roadbike chasers of Kent Horner, Greg Goodall and Brett Chilcott. Pieter came into T2 with just over a minute on Kent and 2 minutes on Jan Schutte, who once again dominated the mountainbike leg. Jan couldn’t catch either Pieter or Kent on the run, but his cumulative great performances in both event 1 and 2 place him well in the lead in the Series.
In the ladies race, the heat was on between elite triathlete Claire Kinsley and renowned multisport athlete Jeannie Bomford. Jeannie had a phenomenal mountainbike, whilst Claire led the roadbike. Jeannie and Claire entered transition together, and Claire managed to hold Jeannie off on the run to win by just a few seconds. Kirsty Weir and Hanlie Booysens rounded out the top 4 girls, with Kirsty’s consistence performance putting her in the ladies lead for the Series.
The team event was dominated by the top mountainbiking of Simon Raubenheimer and fast-paced run of Raoul de Jongh, showing his form for next month’s Ironman Hawaii.
The second race in the Series once again attracted a full field of beginners as well as competitors from the first event who showed great improvements on their times, even with the higher water levels causing tricky running and mountainbiking conditions. The last event in this Series takes place at the same venue on 2nd November. This promises some exciting action, as well as fast times as conditions will hopefully be much drier.
Check out all the results from this race as well as the Series standings under the Events – How did we do tab.

There are less than 3 weeks to go until the Freshpak Fitness Festival in Clanwilliam on 4/5th Oct, so go to www.entrytime.com and enter.
The Freshpak Fitness Festival is one of the largest triathlon festivals of the year, and for many people is their first attempt at doing a triathlon. It not only attracts a big beginners field, but also many elite athletes. The Festival takes place on Clanwilliam Dam on Saturday 4th October. Most people tend to come up for the whole weekend to enjoy the festival and the legendary after-party on Saturday night.
There is a sprint distance triathlon (800m/20km/5km) in the afternoon, a duathlon in the morning, as well as a 3km long-distance swim. You can enter online at www.entrytime.com.

| 28 Aug: Getting into triathlon gear workshop - [ show/hide ]
SSISA/New Balance “Getting into triathlon gear" workshop & WPTA registration takes place Monday 1st Sept.
As spring approaches and days get longer and warmer, so the triathlon season swings into action. Triathlon training keeps you in excellent shape, and because you are focusing on three different sporting codes, you are much less likely to pick up an injury as often happens when training for just one sport. This is just one reason, why triathlons are becoming immensely popular in South Africa.
To help you on your way to a great triathlon season, the Sports Science Institute of South Africa (SSISA) and New Balance are hosting a highly informative workshop entitled “Getting into triathlon gear”. It is sanctioned by WP Triathlon Association (WPTA) and in fact is combined with the opportunity to register with WPTA/TSA for the 2008-2009 season. The workshop is aimed at triathletes with some sprint distance triathlon experience, who are looking at participating in Olympic distance triathlons.
It will be held at the SSISA in Newlands, Cape Town, Monday 1 September 2008 and to motivate, inspire and inform you, there will be some key speakers. These include Richard Woolrich (Biokineticist and former professional SA triathlete and All Africa Triathlon Champion in 2002), Dr Lize Havemann (registered dietician and Ironman finisher), Viv Williams (Triathlon World Champ, for her age-group in 2007), a current elite SA triathlete and Kathy Mc Quaide (sports scientist at the SSISA who represented SA in her age-group, World Tri Champs 2008). Topics include key principals for training for each discipline; tips for a speedier transition; nutritional nuggets of information as well as inspirational messages from triathletes of all calibres. MSM and Atlantic Triathlon clubs will say a few words during the workshop.
The evening starts at 18h00 for 18h15 with registration for both the workshop and WPTA/TSA, who will be able to answer any queries. There will also be a lucky draw with excellent prizes from New Balance, Hammer Nutrition, Runner’s World and Bicycling Magazine and the SSISA. The workshop fee is R35 per delegate and this includes notes and light snacks.
Seating is limited so to avoid disappointment, contact SSISA on (021) 659 5725 or email ccoupar@ssisa.com to secure your place.

| 24 Aug: ATC rejuvenates duathlon with X-Roads - [ show/hide ]
Almost 250 athletes of all levels took to the starting line today in the inaugural USN New Balance X-Roads Series.
The weather held off for today as event 1 in this great new Series kicked off at Phisantekraal Farm in Durbanville. The previous day's rain had created muddy and challenging conditions on the mountainbike leg, but this only added to the enjoyment of the event. 2007 World age-group Duathlon Champion Richard Murray led off the first 5km run onto the road bike, closely followed by international Xterra athlete Nico Pfitzimaier who chose the mountainbike route. Nico managed to make up time on his bike leg with the perfect result of road and mouontainbiker coming into T2 together. Richard proved too strong on the second run and cruised to victory, followed by Nico and Xterra-athlete Jan Schutte. Kirsty Weir on her road bike won for the ladies, followed by Sarah Louw and Jayde ower-Jackson. The first mountainbiker in the ladies was Robyn Ferrar.
The most impressive aspect of the event was the number of new and first-time cross-over athletes. ATC are looking to perfect some of the operational issues in the next stage of the Series, including split transition, race shutes and expanded facilities. If event 1 was an indication, this Series looks set to rejuvenate duathlon in the Province with numbers exceeding any recent events of this type. Well done to all competitors, sponsors and helpers in this event. The second leg of the Series takes place on 28th September, and the final on 2nd November 2008.
Check out the photos of this event at www.oakpics.com and the results under "How did we do" on the Events tab. Full race report at http://www.atlantictriclub.co.za/default.asp?pageid=3140.

| 19 Aug: Snowsill and Frodeno take Olympic Gold - [ show/hide ]
Australian Emma Snowsill and German Jan Frodeno have taken gold in the triathlon at the Beijing Olympics.
In the men's race, Jan Frodeno (South-African born) unleashed a brilliantly timed sprint to take the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games gold medal in a time of 1:48:53 only 50 metres from the line.
“Previously this year I have lost all my races very closely in sprints,” Frodeno said of his dramatic turnaround in sprinting form. “And one thing that does is that it teaches you a lesson. So I learnt it for the right time I guess.”
Frodeno’s sprint in the stifling conditions was too hot for Canadian Simon Whitfield who claimed the silver medal five seconds behind, and New Zealand’s Bevan Docherty who took the bronze medal 12 seconds back.
Pre-race favourite and form athlete of the last two years Spaniard Javier Gomez just fell short of the medals finishing in fourth 20 seconds behind the German.
And in the women's race, Emma Snowsill lived up to all the pre-race hype to win the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games women’s triathlon gold medal with a blistering run leg in the scorching heat at the Ming Tomb Reservoir triathlon course.
“Coming down on the last lap I had to throw in whatever I had left,” said the diminutive Aussie. “There’s nothing like running scared. I put every ounce of energy into this.”
Snowsill’s winning time of 1:58:27 was an amazing 66 seconds ahead of joint pre-race favourite Portugal’s Vanessa Fernandes, who took silver, and 88 seconds in front of another Australian Emma Moffatt, who finished strongly for the bronze.

With a few days left until the first event in the USN New Balance X-Roads Series, excitement and entries are growing.

ATC has gone out of it's way to put on a professional show, and we hope to have many first-timers as well as elite athletes racing. Entries can be done on the day, but it would be wise to secure your pre-entry at www.entrytime.co.za before 20th August.

| 28th July: Beginner to CYCLING? - [ show/hide ]
ATC introduces 'complete beginner training rides', specifically targeted at girls
Keen to get involved in a 'beginners girls-only' weekend road-riding schedule (aimed towards the Argus)? We are looking at starting at around the beginning of August.
We know a lot of you are very experienced riders and triathletes, but we also know about the intimidation factor for beginners, especially the girls, to start riding. With this in mind, ATC are setting up a routine ride for the weekends in preparation for the Argus. Although these rides are primarily aimed at the girls, everyone is welcome!
You do not need to commit to every weekend, but we will be setting up a schedule so that there are always a few experienced riders joining the rides. It would be great if the inexperienced riders would attend weekly so that you can get into a routine which will improve your cycling.
We have a new member on board (Gabi Rosario) who will take charge of this ride and co-ordinate it weekly, but being very new to the sport she will rely on the experienced athletes to help (the boys will come down the first few weeks to offer assistance too!).
Once we have a better idea of numbers we will contact interested parties and arrange the schedule. In time, Gabi will explain to you the reason behind her being so passionate about training towards the Argus. Within the weekly schedule, Gabi (and all the group riders) will be following a structured program geared towards the Argus. The program has been developed by the Sports Science Institute specifically for Gabi's training.
Please email us at the Club - we look forward to your feedback. Please feel free to invite anyone that you feel might benefit from this cycling group.

| 3rd July: ATC reveals the X-Roads Duathlon Series - [ show/hide ]
USN and New Balance are sponsoring the brand new addition to the Duathlon race season, the X-Roads Duathlon Series
The Atlantic Triathlon Club is proud to once again present their X-Road Duathlon (run-bike-run) event. This year it will be bigger and better with 3 events making up a series and new sponsors who together bring you the 2008 USN New Balance X-Roads Series. Each event takes place at the same great venue over the same course, approximately one month apart, which enable you to gauge your improvement or race against your friends. The event is open to all levels of athletes (over the age of 16) from complete beginners to elites, and there will be great prizes. The format is run/bike/run with a 5km run on dirt road, and then a choice of 18km moutainbike or 25km road bike, then finishing off with a 2.5km run. The event is designed such that road bikers can race mountainbikers, and the cycling distances may be adjusted slightly to make the overall cycling times almost exact for each discipline. The moutainbike route is jeep track and the road route is an undulating straight tar road. Numbers are limited so enter quickly!

| 9th June: SA athletes shine at World Tri Champs - [ show/hide ]
South Africa performed exceptionally well at the 2008 Tri Champs held this past weekend in Canada.
Despite freezing temperatures and treacherous swimming conditions, athletes from South Africa fared exceptionally well at the Triathlon World Champs held this past weekend at Stanley Park in downtown Vancouver. Incredible performances came in particular from our elite athletes. SA Olympic hopeful Hendrik de Villiers obtained his best ever World Champs placing finishing in 4th place, just one second behind third placed Hug. Marie Rabie obtained Africa's first ever World Champ medal taking bronze in the under 23 elites. Kate Roberts also had a strong showing finishing 18th in the female elites.
Special mention must go to the age-group athletes, some 50 of them, who competed in trying conditions on Saturday. The girls swim was shortened to 1100m and by the time the men started the event had been changed into a duathlon due to the dangerous swimming conditions (with a 3km run replacing the swim) . SA athletes did exceptionally well, in particular ATC girls Sarah Louw and Matha Koekemoer who did us proud. Well done to everyone who took part. Hopefully we will see better conditions next year in Australia's Gold Coast.

| 1st June: ATC launches a new website! - [ show/hide ]
After much anticipation, here it is...our new website!
Following on from our Club rebranding last year, we have launched a new website. Our thanks goes to Mark Magielse from Ukubona who kindly sponsored this new website. The new and improved site will be updated on an almost daily basis, which is possible due to the great back-end system. We will have latest news updates, results, photos etc. We are also very excited to be launching later this month dedicated pages on strength and conditioning, Ironman and nutrition brought to you by specialists in these fields. Enjoy the new website and we welcome feedback.

| 25th May: ATC secures new sponsors - [ show/hide ]
ATC is proud to announce a new apparel sponsor in the form of New Balance.
In line with the Club's growth and new brand strategy, we have secured New Balance as a dedicated apparel partner. We are very excited about this link-up given New Balance's commitment to multisport over the years. The link-up will see great deals being passed onto ATC members as well as New Balance support at ATC events. In addition to New Balance, USN have furthered their commitment to ATC with an expanding relationship. Olympic Cycles, Touchline Media and Kelfords will also continue to provide support to the Club. Thanks to all the great sponsors.

The other members are Marilu Matthee, Grant Curtis, Diego Blasquez, Wane Rossouw, Wendy Blackmore and Lynn Hanes. Tony Bradford and Debbie Alexander will stay on in an advisory capacity. There is significant ATC representation on the new Committee. We wish the incoming WPTA committee good luck in taking WP forward in a new and dynamic way.

| 14 Apr: Congrats to all the Ironman 08 finishers! - [ show/hide ]
Almost 30 ATC members joined a record field at the 2008 Ironman competition in Port Elizabeth on Sunday 13th April.
The perfect conditions of flat sea and minimal wind made for great results all round. ATC members and other Cape Town triathlon locals were spurred on by the raucous cheering coming from the ATC gazebo and supporters zone near transition. A great day out for all and special mention to those that completed their first event. Wane Rossouw, Dale Gallagher and Dave Stone (20yrs old) managed to break 11 hours. Congrats also to Vix Shepphard, Nigel Barnes, Gert Wilkins, Stu Hoy, Paul Sale and De Waal Gerstner on their great times, exceeding their own expectations. Click our EVENTS tab for full results.

| 2 Apr: ATC launches a girls only section - [ show/hide ]
To respond to the needs of our members and to encourage more girls into our sport, we have launched ATC girls.
CALLING ALL 10min/km, 8min/km, 5min/km LADIES. OUR AIM is to create a running environment that is friendly, non competitive, informative and fun.
We want you to meet other runners, form "training groups" and spend time learning the ropes, gaining confidence and getting advise. The run is open to ALL women, ATC members or not (for a limited time); bring your friends, colleagues, sisters, mothers, boyfriends dressed in drag and come and join us, lets make running fun!
ATC girls will be run by Carla Loureiro, a seasoned triathlete and huge promoter of new entrants to the sport. Although initially ATC girls will focus on girls-only running groups, it will later encompass cycling. The ATC girls meet every Wednesday at the Clubhouse for a 30 min run from 6pm. The pace is lesiurely and caters for all levels. The numbers have already been great with at least 10-15 girls coming down for the run. As the group gets bigger, we will be splitting it into smaller groups based on ability.
We are still having the BEEP TEST (1st Wednesday of each month) for those ladies that would rather do the fitness test.
